About Jane

A Message from Jane

I started Fitness Choices in April of 2002. I wanted to make it easier for residents in my area to get fit. I’m dedicated to helping people of all ages and abilities in and around Vernon County reap the many rewards of a regular exercise program.

I offer classes at different sites around the area, saving people driving time and providing exercise choices.

Chances are high that I have the perfect program for your particular fitness level. I also have the experience to help you get fit without injuries while making working out fun. My training, certification, and continuing education credits keep me up to date to help you reach your goals.

Since 2005, I've been living in rural Viola with my many animals. When not working, I can be found hiking, biking, kayaking, or leading women on group hikes and backpacking adventures

—Jane Schmidt

Jane’s Bio

Jane worked for the Southwest YMCA for ten years where she was the director of strength and conditioning for their fitness center and programs. She was then hired by a private multi-facility club as the group exercise director.

If the school is closed in your area, there is no class today. If the schools are delayed for 2 hours in your area, morning classes are cancelled, but afternoon classes are on. Occasionally there may be an instructor emergency. It will be posted on Facebook and I'll make every effort to contact participants if possible.

Jane’s Book

Not a Perfect Fit is a collection of stories that are laugh-out-loud funny one minute and thought-provoking the next. Stories range from Schmidt’s experience living off-grid as the only English woman in an Amish neighborhood to family trips that are remarkably similar to National Lampoon’s Vacation. Through it all, she manages to rise above the many challenges she faces―inspiring and entertaining her audience along the way. Filled with animal antics, gratitude, mishaps, and madcap adventures, Not a Perfect Fit’s tell-all, single-girl-gone-country, down-home stories give readers permission to laugh and cry―and, most important, to carry on.

Praise for Not A Perfect Fit

“If, as my therapist once suggested, the ability to laugh at oneself is a sign of sanity, then Jane Schmidt must be one of the sanest people I know! In daring to share herself fully with the reader through these funny and heartfelt stories of country life, Jane helps us laugh loud into that sometimes heartbreaking gap between our dreams and realities, and between what we hope is true about ourselves and what actually is. Whether you live out in the country or in the big city, Not a Perfect Fit is a gift of laughter, vulnerability, and wisdom.”
~ Jennifer Morales, award-winning author of Meet Me Halfway
Jane exudes an innocence in her presentation of life that made me want to meet her and see the world through her eyes. She had me laughing and commiserating, shocked and envious, all at once. Definitely a fun read, and I would recommend this book to all, without any hesitation.

“Jane Schmidt, after reading your book “Not a Perfect Fit”, I can honestly say that it was one of the highlight reads of the year for me. I laughed, and I cried. Seriously, tears running down my face after reading “Mom and Me”. Nobody has done that for me in years. It lives up to Michael Perry’s accolades.”

I am absolutely in love with this book! As an elementary reading teacher of forty years, I am always looking for books that truly engage children. This is done by tapping into background knowledge and helping them use creative listening and reading skills through the asking of leading, “kid” friendly questions. Jane Schmidt’s book about her adventure with her precious little dog does both. The photographs are incredible both in quality and in telling the story. As a grandma, I can’t wait to hand deliver the books I purchased to my own grandkids and great- grandkids.

Finnegan’s Superior Adventure is a delightful children’s book about a dog and his backpacking adventure with his Grandma Riley. Reading about the “superior” adventure from Finnegan’s point of view gets the reader interested in each part of the trip. The book engages the reader with beautiful photographs and thoughtful questions throughout the story that allow for good discussion and investigation. Bringing nature, adventure, and fitness to children is an added benefit of this wonderful book by Jane Schmidt.

Jane’s Philosophy

How I feel about fitness, the outdoors, and why I do what I do.

Jane is respectful to all who risk coming through the door to start exercising. She meets each person where they are at and inspires them to want to engage in healthier living. I love her class.
— Laraine Buckles
A year in Jane’s Team Training class made me the healthiest I’ve ever been. I’ve worked with personal trainers in Madison and Chicago, but Jane beats them all. Her mix of cardio, strength training, flexibility, and fun works wonders.”
— Tamara Dean
Jane is a real person.
She makes me feel very comfortable.
— Beth Unger
Jane has a way of making every workout fun! Even as we do things we maybe don’t like, she makes it fun with stories or her sense of humor and before we know it, we made it through the exercise. Jane is very knowledgeable in so many things. The fact that she continues to learn new and better ways of instruction is incredible. It makes for a great feeling of confidence for all.
— Gwen Hatfield
Jane is a great fitness instructor for a variety of reasons. She knows what she’s doing. She is knowledgeable about anatomy and the science of exercise. She adapts exercises for the individuals in the class for a wide range of criteria, including fitness level, flexibility, and issues that her students present on the spot. She varies the line-up of exercises to emphasize particular areas of the body and to keep the classes interesting. She cares about her students. She tells great stories and makes the class time fly by!
