Up & Down

Excerpt From "Jane's World"

“Farmer Brown, Farmer Brown, let me down.”

"What will you give me?”

“I'll give you a horse.”

And the seesaw I was sitting on would go down.

“Farmer Brown, Farmer Brown, let me down.”

“What will you give me?”

“I'll give you a dog.”

And my side of the seesaw would go up, and my friend Jon's would go down.

On and on we'd go, until I had a cabin in the country, a whole mess of animals, and a lake to swim in. Jon would get a place in Alaska and many dogs. When we tired of this game, we would head over to the swings and see who could pump the hardest to get the highest. Having a best friend in summer is the best. Having a friend who understands your dreams is the bestest. Jon was like that for me and I for him. We weren’t exactly kids. We were out of high school.
